Acts 17 v 11

Copy Permit

Who is this ONE God person?

I know, I know, ………….. that sounds a bit irreverent.

But consider all the possible readers of this.  It is the question which in some manner or other all who come to belief [faith is later] will ask.

So for those embarking on this subject:

In a scientific styled world the declaration of an invisible unseeable God immediately raises the doubts and/or hackles of some.

So let us consider some of the ‘not seeing options’, those totally blind, still get on with their lives.  And we who continue to be blessed with the wonderful gift of eyesight very often reduce our use of it, and sometimes we have to.  Imagine the man steering a narrowboat along a canal, he does not look around himself very much -except to the recently placed jug of tea!  He remembers the comment of his teachers if he did; “Look where you’re going you stupid idiot!”  -this man’s teacher had been very polite.

We can learn the controls of equipment so well that we see those controls with our mind’s eye, and we use our gaze for the task in hand, we may even say “I can do that Blindfolded!”

So “seeing” is only partly done by our eyes, what we really see is a mental picture of reality around us.  We plunge our valuable right hand into into the unobserved void, take hold of some lever or other and immediately know the machines setting at a finger’s touch.  Just note how often we see with our fingertips alone!

“Seeing is believing” is often tempered by knowledge or experience in a given area, where the expert may set aside what is seen to the consternation of non expert observers.  This counterintuitive action based on the expert’s  previous knowledge.

If our mind recognises an object our knowledge of that object is called on it.  We seldom see problems of parallax in recognised objects as cameras and untrained eyes may do, as our mind's eye corrects and informs the view we thought we saw.

This mind’s eye is the real seeing power even with eyes shut or no eyes.  Visual perception is enhanced by our knowledge/experience and is no longer a mere picture but an analysis of our real surroundings.

-So not quite such a problem then?

[The eye is such a superlative device, we tend to forget it is not the only input device the mind’s  visual perception uses.]

So some look at Nature and see it as all chance, as a case in point let us consider the rock lump we call Earth.

It is the right size and the right distance from the Sun but might this occur by chance?  Yes but that is simplistic, these two things are not all there is to this rock package.

Thirdly, rotation gives a suitable day night balance of heating & cooling.

In addition to a suitable rotation a stable axis tilt causes seasons producing North & South temperate regions.  Without this axis tilt Earth would be in perpetual Equinox (that is, as if: March 21st or September 21st last all year).

Gravity placed strong enough to hold atmosphere against the vacuum of space without too much constraint on animal size.

Gravity interplay between Earth & Moon causes tides which stir Oceans further spreading the heat around this Planet.

Seasonal plant life and animal migration function with these seasons.

Atmosphere gases, Oceanic water, and Continental crust are all in cycles.

Like all fires the Sun tends to spit and spark from time to time, Earth is magnetic and those fields throw the hazard off in a boreal light show.

Even where this solar system is in the galaxies may be a safe placement?

Not just one or two things its a bundle package deal here. I count over ten factors in synchronous concert which have to be right.

This particular rock lump is a multifunction device.

Perfect for Life - Looks like a “set up” doesn't it?

 [& in line with the duck-quack-dog-bark proverb…..]

If it looks like a mega-terraform operation by an immensely powerful and artistic intellect,

then maybe accept the obvious: that it is a mega-terraform operation by an immensely powerful and artistic intellect.    Romans 1 v 20

So how do you see it? What is your visual perception of such a situation?

Is somebody trying to trick you?

To borrow from golf, how many consecutive birdies before you’ll concede he’s a pro?

Clearly We did not make it!

Nor did we make or design ourselves.

Forget all those pagan and Michelangelo concepts this is a difficult job for any God person. Psalm 90 v 2 - & There is an intimidating original word used here for translators, birth pangs is meant in the text!  only a few brave enough to use it but some others do honestly note it for readers. There is a shy away from ascribing anything of their subordinate female to the person of the Almighty.

{This may require access to an interlinear translation for the Hebrew text.}

But THE TEXT IS THE TEXT! So that must be what He means to SAY!

So what could He mean by what He says?

Firstly we must not try to see Yahweh through our viewpoint in this case, because we will get things backwards.  We are the creation “copies of his Image” which in that first stage is not male or female that comes After Man’s creation.  [We are all men, which gender is of secondary importance.]

So then the “Image” is split into male & female paired roles, in marriage there is a certain reassembly of the Image of God, therefore it is proclaimed a sacred bond, perhaps that explains part of the magnetism?

One could imagine bemused Angels observing men and women arguing about their respective roles, “the half images are disputing again about which half is the better!?!”

Better we were to meditate on the honor so gifted, being in that Image whilst dwelling with our spouse who is also of that Image, as one?

Secondly we must remember that Yahweh explains things of the spirit world in human terms so we can understand, so rather than think in terms of its exactly like this or that, why not think in the best or most appropriate likeness to this or that human way?

The comparison with birth pangs, would be birth pangs as they are meant to be at first, before Eve’s sin and would exclude the dread and drama frail humans may feel, or the stresses of not knowing.

That said Yahweh did not choose a male task to illustrate the point, food for thought boys!

Individually we experience the Image partially, deficit of the full breadth of the Image.  Reconsider Matthew 23 v 37 [& keep it in mind, hmm ….. was Jesus full breadth?].

So let us throw around some ideas, here are three to get you started;

1.Could be about the style of Creation, consider a ship built on land in a yard, not exposed to the waves of the sea until structurally sound, then it is slid into the water its future environment.  A sort of birth?

2.Could it be a wrap around of the Earth by the Creator, whilst forming it and protecting it?

3.Could it refer to the emotional feelings, intense involvement, the pinnacle pleasure at success?

Whatever, Yahweh did not think anything men go through quite “cut the mustard”?

Birth pangs…..You mean…... so that  Hard eh!

The Seduction of Woman a.k.a. Eve.

Everything should have been fine. But due to the Sin in Eden, as of now, no direct relationship is possible with Yahweh our Creator.

How serious this was can be seen if we compare the first lie directly with the sentiments of God’s later innuendo address to the king of Tyre [Tyre had become a bit like satan] and Jesus’ observation on the sources for words spoken: Genesis 3 v 4,5 : Ezekiel 28 v 11 to 19 : Matthew 12 v 34. [Even Yahweh has been let down by a son.]

There is a possible omitted storyline which can be extrapolated by things we learn in other Scriptures, When did the called council occur after Man’s sin? After Genesis 3 v 7 and completed by 3 v 8.

Yahweh is a communicator a conference call.

Compare: Job 1 v 6, 2 v 1 & 1Kings 22 v 1 -38. [if you don’t know these verses you must read them! Or you just will not get it?]

Let us use our imagination wherein we can create the scenario and postulate the Edenic scenes.

Although of/in spirit form, God and Angels are often spoken of in terms of location or travel.  I suggest here that this meeting due to an immediate situation was done by God’s spirit communicating rather than regular angelic assembly.

The covering Cherub has betrayed the trust of Yahweh.

The Man and the Woman sin.

God is committed to execution of the sinners by his word Genesis 2 v 17, Are all the Angels about to say nothing and just acquiesce? Are we to think only Lucifer was bold in his expressions.  Some other angels had been working hard on this project too.

Strategy of Satan.

There is an issue at this crisis point, the power of reproduction had been already given and the [God] promised as yet unborn had not rebelled Genesis 1 v 28.

Nor had all the other life forms rebelled & the Creation Man was intended to care for.

Therefore God is judicially committed to execute the parents but has promised the unborn life?

This might explain why Lucifer had chosen that time to strike at the neck of Human genealogy, creating an impasse situation to highly embarrass God’s position of authority.

God as creator of All, had so far directed how things would go [His choosing].  This was an attempted seizure.  Not of the power that would be ridiculous, but perhaps the Dignity in controlling said power.

Hmm; “very nice creation God but we fancy a republic.”

If the Law of God’s word went directly ahead, it could be seen as ‘unjust though lawful’.  So the promised potential for Life could be considered in this sense as if a Life in itself because of that promise [compare Isaiah 55 v 11], even more so as straightforward justice would cause an extinction event and thus also void the work of God in Creation and those angelic helper’s work also, destroying Earth’s Caretaker provision entirely.  Keeping Justice and Law in tandem have taxed the skills of many since.

This would bring God’s work and command to fill the Earth to failure through no fault in his actual work.

Something had to be done….

We are not told if God had executed before, maybe all the Angels had passed a test maybe not, but resentment and pride had grown in one at least.  Some angels may have viewed humanity as the new kid getting all the attention or some similar envious reaction; Revelation 12 v 9 Satan is not alone.

These issues may have surfaced very quickly as Lucifer/Satan had been placed as covering Cherub in Eden.  Those with some years of Scripture study come to realise, that for all the problems of this sinful  Earth, this is only a part of the story, well maybe a significant sideshow, but the main problems are in heavenly places.

Having got thus far; what is God? Backtrack on the Bible’s story; we are Men or Women which are a division of God’s image, angels as far as we know are not a division, so imagine a mind with male and female qualities united, a sort of mind which can handle abstract thoughts in fact several all at the same time! Then leave the Human realm as God is a spirit this bit we have to imagine.  The seniority of God being creator of all things means an intimate knowledge of the whole of all creation in all the dimensions it may exist, along with all the history, being alone without personal genesis beginning.  Thus you may be able to imagine what God is, in some ways not that different, In others many magnitudes of difference!  Scriptures refer to God  as a singular person with a Name, but also as spirit or a spirit; the first is personal the second may be taken as generic or nature.  This person is the primary Creator of All things spirit and material.  The “Spirit of God” appears as a way in which he extends his power/influence away from his location in person.  Our word “inspiration” renders this idea.

Due weight must be given to God styling himself as a father and Angels and Mankind being made in his image.  To create a sentient life-form in one’s own image must truly  be a fatherly act?

So in some ways we are not that different from the Creator in others we are not on the same scale. **Whoops!!!  But that is using a colloquial phrase it sounds nice, but it is not really true. A groveling ‘how unworthy’ compared with the infinite makes no practical sense.  He made us on the same scale because we are in His Image, He said that. Might I suggest we are on the same scale at the units end able to grasp the duties assigned to us?

Whilst we share some of the feel of life with the animals, they lack, morality, subtleties of wisdom, wit of the raconteur, or to be largely free from their instincts, it does give us a sympathy with our charges but they are not able to be partners with us.

Really are we not very much nearer our God, than the animals?

Let us say as having one unit, two or three of the said mental power a smaller but effective portion as He saw fit.  Collectively we are all able to be competent caretakers of the Creation.  [same scale different magnitude].

So is the spirit of man in any way comparable to the Spirit of God?

If we are in his Image.

Bit difficult to define but in the confusion of the semantics we all “sort-of” know exactly what we mean; nobody questions the poets, do they?

Scientifically we get nowhere, well sometimes it may be hormonal, adrenalin or things like these but then science sometimes takes all the colour out of life. Boring.

We must remember we are copies made in flesh of the grand Creator.

With God and the Angels, it is easier to imagine, a mind in The Image directly controlling a body in the spirit, in God’s case consider ‘template’ for ‘Image’.

The spirit seems subject to the Will or mind of the Image.

Just in Mankind the ‘body’ is flesh not spirit form.

Now consider the comment by a person who had experience of both forms at: Matthew 26:41, kinda empathetic eh?

Still it is nice to be human.

So let us review a little on what we barely understand.

God is a spirit and has a spirit  Template

Angels are spirits and have a spirit image

Man is not a spirit and has a spirit image

It would seem there is a structural commonality, although form and scale vary dramatically.

Can these interface in some way? :Romans 8 v 16.

I think that is far enough on this for the present.

What to do??

The sin however was real enough and could not be undone.  Humanity owed God [as the justice] two lives there and then.

It would seem Yahweh is determined his Universe will practice righteousness throughout.

Who is this Christ “son of God” person.

An easy way out is not to be taken.

If we consider that the pre-human Jesus was of the angelic Creation, then he would by this be God’s son; since they all are. Job 1 v 6 in some Bibles check footnote.  Though not one of the other angels has been begotten as human.

So, I suggest for ‘son of God’; any person/sentient [Angel or Human] in the “Image of God” and having a full relationship with Him.  Calling Jesus the son of God does not exclude the faithful Angels, it’s just that among us sinning humans we have no other, it is his distinction among us.  A ‘second Adam’, our new life giving patriarchal father; Isaiah 9 v 6.

We should avoid too constrictively thinking in our human terms of son for this, [though by now the Father son working relationship must run very deep].

A human father and son are in many respects equals both being men, differing in experience of life, often sharing in family ‘looks’ weakness’ and strengths.  It is a family relationship which excludes others who also are equally men.  When we call Jesus God’s son it is to replace another that was Adam. Luke 3 v 38 Jesus will then be Patriarch of all Mankind consider Isaiah 9 v 6..

So being God’s son never implies any form of equality, but trinity believers see it so.

This is an unnecessary assumption; The What/Who is Christ/Jesus probably volunteered to do the job: John 10 v 15 - 18, contrast this with John 5 v 19. It makes sense of the seeming contradiction with 10 v 18 as the original volunteer offer being accepted then carried out exactly as Yahweh directed.  Note: It was a suicide mission which he received permission to go ahead with.

Why did the victim of the ransom have to be a human male?

1. Because it was Adam’s sin which had to be paid

2. Paid by a member of the human race for fellow humanity.

The volunteer did not posses a human body so..., Hebrews 10 v 5.

[It cannot be established and is not a “faith issue”, but {I suggest} the body Christ had on Earth would seem to have been as Man before Woman was made from him?]

The Christ may not have been in his creation an Angel of such great rank as many Arian type believers suppose, but became such as a matter of commitment to being the volunteer agent of saving the human creation And God giving the ‘tools to do the job’.  From his origins he is then exalted, an equal of God or near equal could not be exalted.  “Exalted” means a great move in rank/position so the previous position was the reverse of the exaltation.  Philippians 2 v 9 balance with 1 Corinthians 15 v 27.  [Joseph prison to Pharoah’s number two in one day, that’s exalted].

However consider Christ’s request, is he asking for glory or just his old job back? John 17 v 5; - -Like some other things here it’s not a faith issue. -I’ll leave that to you.

What is Genesis suggesting to us in the highlighting of  Isaac, Jacob, Joseph? Messianic type stories all [God exalted?] younger brothers.  Consider 1 Corinthians 10 v 11 -check footnotes etc.

Look again at the honours of Christ in Revelation, because...you.... Can you find any statement like “you the firstborn take up your rights as firstborn -just because you are firstborn?

We perhaps should imagine an angel, who did his job to the best of his ability and who was more committed and interested at heart to God’s creation process than he was ambitious.  Alarmed at what the Eden sin might result in, he may have become more outspoken in called Council than expected of his standing. What is Genesis telling us? Compare Genesis 41 v 38.

And God concluded that’s the one.  [A Pharoah’s ring situation/parallel].

I will venture but have no means of knowing; that it was after this that an angel of [initially] lower rank than Lucifer may have been bestowed the generic title/name “the Word”, since his mission now was to make God’s promises stand: Genesis 1 v 28 & 2 v 17 =”The Word role”. 2Corinthians 1 v 20, Isaiah 55 v 8-11..

[There is a change; instead of rule-penalty there comes emphasis on motive, the loving of righteousness.]               .

Some other questions can be raised in Council;

Does God have a sense of duty or/or affection for the potential offspring trapped in this scenario? [as we are in his image then our basic inborn emotional pattern should be based on his??] If you have not noticed before this is a Hostage situation; unborn within the due to be executed today.

Does the willing victim have what it takes to carry out all duties which may fall to him?

How to protect the trapped offspring from immediate sentence of death due within 24 hours, a statement the Almighty is duty bound to keep.

-You might be able to think of more?

Remember Abraham’s plea over Sodom Genesis 18 v 23 onwards, more in Ezekiel 18.

Just as we have found in human affairs, it becomes imprudent to continue on as things are, temporary setups are required, though in this case thousands of our years will pass until 1 Corinthians 15 v 28.  We must remember too that there is a Rebel in Heaven, and those issues to deal with -the issues we see are only part of the problem.  We might also consider extenuating circumstances here in that there is a case of outside interference to the situation.

You will have heard in some translations the word Agent used in regard to the Christ.

A “middleman” or an Agent is required.

The willing victim being the sin intercessor is clearly the one fitted for this.

There is now a what we could call, a technical destruction of the Heavens and Earth,

-being subjected to futility [but with hope] Romans 8 v 20.  That is Yahweh’s faultless Creation under His direct supervision Ends, though still in overall charge, today we would call it a ‘more hands off role’.  It is now created by God and his agent; or it is put under a new management team of 2: Colossians 1 v 16 : John chp 1.  Compare and balance Jeremiah 18 v 1-10, Romans 9 v 21, the clay has been spoiled and has been made into something else.  If there had been nobody to play a saving role, God would be obliged to literally destroy things, so there is in a sense a Creation by avoiding the destruction.  Jesus is not in any way assuming original creatorship of the Earth by this.  The Person of Yahweh; expels the sinners from Eden by the sword they are dead from his standpoint [as are we] and death rules us all for the present with all its pains that blow did happen in the 24hr day man sinned and was expelled from Eden.

It still hurts today when we die it is that expulsion from Eden, there was no exemption from punishment yet.

Compare and consider; separation from God is a death stroke. Matthew 10 v 28.

The temporary Heavens and Earth that now exist are ‘created’ by the agreement of Yahweh with the victim/Christ.  This unhappy failing creation though has Hope, the hostage unborn can be born and choose for themselves.  This means an intersession period where an agent can handle some matters then return all things back to Yahweh.

These too will end; Revelation 21 v 1-5.

This apparent inaction in not executing the wrongdoers to save the unborn, meant the foundation of the World took effect or really was allowed to ‘set’ in place..  But why not? - the Edenic issues are still central, those born [to fill the Earth] choose which side they wish to be on, perhaps get Baptised.

If you take my meaning this universe is oftentimes run from the second chariot of honour, not the throne.

It seems there is a baggage inheritance from trinity belief; because Christians dispute this among themselves since introduction into the 300 year old Church; that in this debate causes even Arian type believers to view Christ’s position as very high, though not as an equal to God.

 We must redress this confusion.

Once we throw out the Roman Empire’s [325-711 CE.] trinity implant into Christendom or have converted from a ‘pagan’ religion where the triple god/goddess is worshiped, some redefinition of identity may help. { Incidentally Trinity possibly the longest lasting Roman artefact still functioning to purpose, ok; along with a few pipes and an Aqueduct.}  Rome had a policy to deal with the religion of the conquered, it understood that all pagan religion has the same basic structure and military tactics cannot fight an idea.  So it actively sought to merge, to ’Syncretize’ belief systems, This worked quite well as pagan religions are similarly based. More difficult with Judaism or Christianity.  But it was worked on from Constantine to Justinian II and the Roman Church was made.  In terms of purity of worship an abomination, as political policy quite expedient, sensible those Romans.  This is history folks, the Trinity is alien to judeo christian Scripture. [look up “Aquae sulis”, “Britannia/Minerva”]

It is when we remove the logic burden caused by the trinity dogma in this manner, that what God, Christ and the Holy Spirit are; becomes clearer.

I suggest for Holy Spirit  : It is a Power projection from Yahweh himself to work with & within Word/Christ’s agency, Christ has a relationship with Yahweh we mankind don’t. Yahweh is doing things on Christ’s behalf -not our’s directly.  John 11 v 40-43: Matthew 26 v 52-54. Hence Yahweh can via Christ ‘asking’ do things for us :John 16 v 23,24.  Anything which may be outside the person of Christ’s own ability can be carried out by God’s ability. [which in all cases is enough.] We can answer this fairly simply, at first in Genesis God’s Spirit is above the waters, if we take this as saying his Spirit can effect things beyond His actual presence, it is easy to see this modified to back the Messianic project. Perhaps Yahweh all along has projected his power when the situation required, be it Creation or Joshua requesting sunlight, miracles, inspiration, or Samson’s strength.  Balance the logic of these two verses Isaiah 43 v 11 with 2Corinthians 1 v 20.  That the Spirit is not a person in itself can be seen from less than ideal use of it in :1Corinthians chp 13 & 14.

God’s spirit is not given his name, perhaps this is because he/it is functioning as an interaction with Christ or others.  Consider although it was Yahweh that pushed the temple down, it was his servant Samson’s wish to do so. [God would not be the only father to say my child did this........... When we all know dad helped quite extensively!]

2Corinthians 1 v 20 : 2Peter 3 v 3-9

Remember we cannot see God, but I hope this helps you “get your head around the subject” and it can be no more than that; proceed on in your study, always remember God is a person you approach a person.  Once you have got to “I believe in God”, stop thinking of God in abstract terms he is a person!

For your consideration,

Talk among yourselves awhile.

Take a little time over this, as you study Scripture just see what fits with a Bible wider view. If you are new to the study of Scripture, it is not as simple as we would write it, this is a woven document.  To suggest Jesus as being one son of God among many such and that he came forward from a lesser position to our aid, does not reduce his now higher [exalted] status as told to us in Revelation.  What we are seeking is not exact, because the exact situation we cannot see/touch anyway; a sensible approximation is all we can hope for.  Do not seek to explain things we cannot possibly know, like some foolish ideas in the Middle Ages. Consider that any in the Image of God who are without sin, thus having a full relationship with God, are therefore ‘sons of God’.  Regular readers of this site will know some matters are dealt with in more detail elsewhere.

: Romans 8 v 19-21 : Revelation 21 v 3-5.

Feel free or not, to allow your imagination as to what the nature of God’s form actually is, provided you always remember that it is only an imagining.  I cannot say this or not that.

When we read of God’s hand, eye or his arm, these things are easily understood as the equivalent function, the hand brings about actions at the direction of the mind, the eye brings a picture of the situation to the mind, the arm adds power and reach to the hand, it would be madness to miss the point by foolishly humanising the Almighty His actual eye, hand or arm will be far more powerful than ours, but maybe this gives us a clue as to the relationship between abilities which go to making up a sentient being of any functional form? Be able to see things, be able to understand things, be able to have influence on things.

But emotion and motive requires no translation consider :Galatians 5 v 22,23 & Micah 6 v 8 and gaze upon the Character of Yahweh the One God: 1 John 4 v 8, 1Corinthians chp. 13, 1Corinthians 2 v 9.

The Image of God however we all have a partial reference copy, some maybe a bit tatty?  But this is about nature not form.

Exalted: Philippians 2 v 5 - 11 : Matthew  24 v 45-47 ;  28 v 18  : Hebrews 3 v 6.

Perhaps I should say something about religion?

I need not list the harm they can and have done, my readers are Internet savvy so web search it.

So what about the good they can do?

Companionship, fellowship, community, sometimes but not always good works, some support for new converts, libraries of books, although religion has become a dirty word  in places, many believers by living their faith have even changed their society for the better.

Things to be uneasy about,

when they decide they represent God directly in all they own opinions,

teach things without Scriptural support.

Imply by what they teach in the congregation that God/Christ/Angels act on their words rather than being a subordinate to a paramount Heavenly spirit group functioning at all times, past present and future.

Matthew  7 v 15-20 : James 1 v 5: 1Timothy 4 v 15: Matthew 18 v 20.

You have a mind of your own and the Bible, and your Prayer if you use them, sort of: read & kneel.

But these worries should not come as a surprise, Jesus warned us at: kingdom of the heavens is like Matthew chp: 13,

V,31. Mustard tree think of old times where birds near a crop are a plundering pest.

V,24. Wheat tares

Wise foolish

We don’t build Jerusalem: Revelation 21 v 2.

Beware of Universalising the meaning of a verse just on the basis it is the Inspired word, when in fact we may have missed context.   We are approximating what these things are.

[  1 Corinthians 13 v 12].
